The class included a photographic journey, fun facts and hands-on activities. Children learned how to recognize and identify marine wildlife, and how the animals eat, sleep and stay warm. The group went to a nearby park to lay out lines of different lengths which represented the size of several marine mammals in Monterey Bay. The blue whale line was the longest – blue whales are the largest mammals at over 100’ long. “Wow! That is huge!” shouted one of the students.
Marine Life Studies provided kids from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County, both Seaside and Salinas Units an experience of a life time this summer. Peggy Stap and Jenna Contuchio first taught classes on whales, dolphins and marine wildlife with photos, fun facts and hands-on activities. Children learned how to recognize and identify marine wildlifes, and how the animals eat and stay warm. Then Marine Life Studies took the kids whale watching at Fisherman's Wharf with Princess Monterey Whale Watching. The day ended with a picnic lunch at a park nearby. An amazing experience for the kids as many of them have never even been to the ocean. Marine Life Studies is a Community Partner with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County.
Jenna Contuchio, Education Coordinator, and Peggy Stap, Research Director, of Marine Life Studies bring "Pollution Solutions" to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County December 2011/January 2012 as part of "Winter Fun" during the kids winter break. Read all about it. Jenna and Peggy are excited to bring marine debris awareness programs for Club Members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County. The topic, "Pollution Solutions", empowers kids with the knowledge that everyday choices they make can make a difference. They will be screening the film "Bag It" as part of the program. There will be hands-on activities for the kids.

Moving on… To a little something more about Peggy Stap, Marine Life Studies, Monterey Bay, killer whales, almost-but-not-quite capsizing, chasing strange smelling oily slicks and being soaking wet for hours on end. As you may know if you have been reading my last few meandering posts, I recently returned to Monterey Bay to be reunited with Peggy Stap of Marine Life Studies (MLS) and her beloved dog, Whiskie the Whale Spotter. |
