Joey Jones Scholarship and Educational Fund

Classes and educational programs are funded in part through the Marine Life Studies Joey Jones Scholarship and Educational Fund in honor of Moss Landing resident and commercial fisherman, Joey Jones, who lost his life at sea April 3, 2008.
Joey’s love of the sea and fishing was the inspiration for the scholarship. He wanted to bridge the gap between the marine science and commercial fishing communities through cooperation, dialogue, education and research. |

As a young boy, Joey Jones moved from Oklahoma to Monterey with his family. Joey immediately fell in love with the ocean. From scrubbing boats and cleaning fish on the local party boats to his increasing involvement in multiple commercial fisheries, he spent the rest of his days on or near the water.
Being a very self-motivated and independent man, Joey loved the rugged independent lifestyle fishing afforded him. He gained a wealth of knowledge and experience, learning the ins and outs of boats and fishing from local skippers and fishermen. He also loved sharing his knowledge. Joey did all he could to help others in the fishing community with any problems they might have, or just provide a job for someone who needed it. His eagerness to help extended far beyond fishing: from coaching little league baseball, to ensuring his children had a quality education, he was always willing to give his time, advice, or money to give someone a boost in the right direction.
Regulation and fishing closures, as well as environmental concerns such as pollution and over fishing have created tension between fishermen and those attempting to create sustainability and a healthy ocean.
Joey wanted to bridge the gap between the Marine Science community and the fishing community through cooperation and dialogue. He believed that the voice of the fisherman is legitimate and offered a unique perspective, bringing experience and knowledge that cannot be reproduced in a classroom.
This scholarship fund will help carry on Joey’s legacy of giving opportunities to others and helping them achieve their personal and educational goals. And it will challenge the participants to help to bridge the gap, create a sustainable ocean environment, and maintain the beauty and abundance of the ocean.
