From responding to entangled whales to collecting vital research data in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, our team works to protect marine mammals and inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.
Our Research Vessel
R/V Current'Sea
Whale Rescue Research Vessel:
"Whale Disentanglement Ambulance"
Our Research Vessel, Current'Sea, is a 44-foot Albin North Sea Cutter that we acquired in 2015 when we realized that we needed a larger operating platform to conduct our research and respond to entangled whales.
We are grateful that we have a safe and operating vessel that is the rapid response boat when a whale is entangled in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. This wouldn’t be possible without our generous and passionate donors. R/V Current’Sea is described as a “whale disentanglement ambulance” (the only one of its kind on the West Coast), that responds to entangled whale emergencies. This vessel must be maintained, managed, and equipped with the specialized tools needed for a complete disentanglement response.
R/V Current’Sea is used for:
- Responding and saving entangled whales through whale rescue
- Preventing future entanglements with our Derelict Fishing Gear Removal Project
- Collecting critical data during research during our Research Scientist Program & whale rescues
- Providing a platform for WET® members to train and gain experience

Cancellation Policy
A cancellation rate will be charged to the user if a boat is reserved and not used unless we are notified of the cancellation two business days in advance. This rate will be based on four hours of the hourly rate normally charged for Current'Sea.
This policy will also be extended to those who wish to block out boat time (standby) for Current'Sea based on the premise that they may or may not use the vessel but wish to have the vessel available specifically for their use during the blocked out time. This rate will also be based on four hours of the hourly rate normally charged for Current'Sea.
RATES MAY CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE.
