MOSS LANDING, CA: A team of 30 volunteers based in Moss Landing frees whales that are tangled by fishing nets, lines, and pots in the Monterey Bay, and an increase in entanglements this year motivated the team to step up their game with a new boat and more volunteers.
When an alert comes in for a tangled whale, the team loads up their gear and heads out to sea. The team's most recent successful mission was a 32-foot humpback near the Farrallon Islands.
"This is our problem. We've created this situation, and we need to be out there coming up with a solution to it." volunteer Research Scientist Victoria Wade said.
