"YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!" says Oscar the Orca, "Follow these simple pollution solutions to keep my beautiful ocean home safe from plastic pollution and marine debris."
Simple choices you make everyday can help keep the ocean safe for whales, dolphins, fish, sharks, turtles, and other marine wildlife.
The best way to stop plastic pollution is to REFUSE disposable plastic. Single use and disposable plastic such as straws, plastic bags and water bottles are some of the biggest sources of plastic pollution. REFUSE that straw; REFUSE that plastic bag; REFUSE that water bottle.
You can make a difference with simple choices:

Remember:
REDUCE means to use less of something. This makes less waste. REUSE is to use things over again instead of throwing them out. RECYCLE is to turn things into something else that can be used. REFUSE disposable plastics such as straws; plastic bags and water bottles. Close the loop! REBUY: Buy recycled products. Look for the recycled symbol on the package. Plastic is detrimental to our oceans and all wildlife. Help make a difference! Take it to the Streets™ is a project of Plastic Police, a Marine Life Studies initiative, dedicated to ridding our oceans and waterways of plastic pollution. |
Take it to the Streets™ goes inland, getting communities involved in cleanup efforts in the streets of our neighborhoods. Greater than 80% of pollution found during beach cleanups is from a land-based source. Take it to the Streets™ compliments other organizations providing beach cleanup opportunities.
BALLOONS: For whales, dolphins, turtles, seals, fish and other marine wildlife, balloons may mean death.
Balloons are ingested by whales, dolphins, turtles, seals, fish and waterfowl, who innocently mistake them for food such as a jelly or squid. Sea turtles and other marine wildlife have been found starved to death with latex balloons blocking their stomachs. The shredded deflated balloon pictured above is just one of many, many balloons we pick up while conducting our whale and dolphin research in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
You can help save the life of a turtle and other marine wildlife with a simple choice. Instead of a balloon use a colorful windsock or a kite and both are reusable.
Balloons can travel hundreds of miles and end up in the ocean. Thousands of animals are killed every year by balloons. Balloons are ingested by whales, dolphins, turtles, seals, fish and water-fowl, who innocently believe they are food such as jellyfish or squid.
If you use balloons never let them loose outside. If you do use a balloon cut it up into small pieces and put in the recycle bin.
"Please start today in making choices to keep my ocean home safe for my family and friends including whales, dolphins, fish, sharks, turtles, and all marine wildlife", says Oscar the Orca, “our lives depend on it.
