 PLEASE HELP SAVE ENTANGLED WHALES!

Whales sometimes get entangled in fishing gear and marine debris, which can lead to a slow and painful death.

Responding quickly to entangled whales and disentangling them is vital--every whale is important to the survival of the species!

Save Entangled Whales in Monterey Bay....

We need your help to fund a dedicated response boat.

A dedicated in-water, rapid response boat and the trained W.E.T team that would go with it, is critical for a timely and successful response to an entangled whale dragging gear.

We have the boat, a 19' Donzi, but need to raise funds to keep it in the water year-round as a dedicated rapid response boat.

Funds are needed for fuel, slip fees, boat maintenance, and additional specialized tools necessary for disentangling whales.

Thank you, Monterey County Gives, for choosing our Big Idea as a donation-worthy cause.

W.E.T, the Whale Entanglement Team, is a group of marine mammal professionals and volunteers that respond to and disentangle large whales under the direction of NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service Office of Protected Resources and Southwest Regional Office. Many of Marine Life Studies volunteers are part of W.E.T. that participate in regular trainings.

The W.E.T. is tasked with responding to whales entangled in fishing gear and marine debris. These highly trained and experienced teams include marine biologists, veterinarians, mariners, and other volunteers. We are not paid nor do we receive compensation for expenses associated in responding to entangled whales. We pay the expenses out of our own pockets. In the case of Marine Life Studies, we took money from our research fund in order to search and respond to entangled whales in Monterey Bay. In addition, several volunteers with Marine Life Studies travel to other areas to respond to and disentangled whales and pay for our own travel expenses.

Responding to, and disentangling whales is vital. The value of what the whales bring to Monterey County is important to the local economy on many levels. Monterey Bay is the Whale Watching Capital of the World. Whale watchers and tourists bring much-needed revenue to our local economy. In addition, Monterey County's efforts to promote conservation and healthy ocean ecosystems are good for the community, the country and the oceans, and are newsworthy garnering national and international PR.
